The student Reading Journals are bursting, and some students keep their Reading Journals Volume I in class crates at the back of the classroom as they embark on Volume II. Readers have experienced “journal-starter” responses, strategy responses, double-entry journals, sticky notes, poetry response, interactive and collaborative response, discussions, anticipatory response, abandonment response, evaluative responses, and text reformulations (see Chapter 9). My readers are ready to move to the next step: individual reading in class. This stage is what some might refer to as “Reading Workshop,” although we have been using workshop format in our classes all year—with shared and book club texts. The students have been trained towards independence in their reading and their responding. Furthermore, by beginning with shared readings and progressing to book clubs, each class has built a reading and response community. By the time students are reading their own texts during class, they do not feel they are reading alone; they may be reading separately but not in isolation—individually, not independently.

My readers are now choosing their own books for in-class reading and discussions, but I am even now adding to their arsenal of reader response. I am continuing to guide them so that they can ultimately choose appropriate and effective ways to respond to their readings.
